Services Offered at Garber Eye Center Include:

  • Comprehensive Eye Exams - Using the Latest Technology Available
  • One of the reasons for this exam is to measure your vision to determine whether or not you need glasses or another form of vision correction. Regular eye exams are also an invaluable tool in maintaining your eyes' health by detecting and preventing disease such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. Early detection of any problems can reduce your risks and allow for a choice of treatment options.

  • Contact Lens Evaluation
  • Over 30 million Americans wear contact lenses, according to the American Optometric Association. Unlike glasses, contact lenses move with your eyes so you can enjoy a larger field of vision with fewer distortions.

  • Fitting of Specialty and Multi-focal Contact Lenses
  • Bifocal and multi focal lenses help patients focus on both nearby and distant objects without having to switch glasses or contact lenses. This is possible because more than one prescription is combined in a single lens. Patients with astigmatism can also enjoy the comfort of soft contact lenses.

  • Diabetic Eye Exams and Co-Management
  • Patients with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing eye diseases that can cause vision loss and blindness, such as diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and glaucoma. These and other serious conditions often develop without vision loss or pain, so significant damage may be done to the eyes by the time the patient notices any symptoms. For this reason it is very important for diabetic patients to have a dilated eye exam and retinal photography once a year.

  • Dry Eye Treatment
  • Dry eye occurs when the eyes aren't sufficiently moisturized, leading to itching, redness and pain. The eyes may become dry and irritated because the tear glands don't produce enough tears, or because the tears themselves have a chemical imbalance.

People usually begin experiencing dry eye symptoms as they age, but the condition can also result from certain medications, conditions and injuries.

Dry eye is not only painful, it can also damage the eye tissues and impair vision. Fortunately many treatment options are available.

Non-surgical treatments for dry eye include prescription medications, increasing humidity at home or work, and use of artificial tears or moisturizing ointment. Also, small punctal plugs may be inserted in the corners of the eyes to increase tear volume, or the drainage tubes in the eyes may be surgically closed.

  • Emergency Eye Care
  • Timely treatment of eye injuries such as embedded foreign bodies, inflammation, and corneal abrasions are examples of some of the emergency eye care that is provided.

Specialty Medical Care Services Offered at Garber Eye Center Include:

  • Cataract Surgical Consultation and Co-Management

  • Cataract surgery removes the cloudy lens and replaces it with a clear artificial lens called an IOL.

We perform a minimally invasive, small-incision, no-stitch cataract surgery called phacoemulsification ("phaco") surgery. First, the eye is numbed with anesthesia. Then a tiny incision is made in the eye to make room for a small ultrasonic probe. This probe breaks up, or emulsifies, the cloudy lens into tiny pieces.

After the cloudy lens has been removed, a new artificial lens, or IOL, is implanted in the eye. With the recent advance of foldable IOLs (intraocular lenses), artificial lenses can be implanted through the same small incision from the phaco procedure.

  • Lasik Refractive Surgical Consultation and Co-Management

  • LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a safe, reliable and painless way to improve vision and reduce or eliminate the need to wear glasses or contact lenses. LASIK changes the way light is bent, or refracted, as it passes through the cornea so that it focuses properly on the retina and objects can be seen clearly. Having an eye exam will help to determine whether you are a good candidate for this procedure.

  • Glaucoma Treatment and Management

  • Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the U.S. It occurs when the pressure inside the eye rises, damaging the optic nerve and causing vision loss. The condition often develops over many years without causing pain or other noticeable symptoms – so you may not experience vision loss until the disease has progressed.

Sometimes symptoms do occur. They may include:

    • Blurred vision
    • Loss of peripheral vision
    • Halo effects around lights
    • Painful or reddened eyes

People at high risk include those who are over the age of 40, diabetic, near-sighted, African-American, or who have a family history of glaucoma.

Regular eye exams help to monitor the changes in your eyesight and to determine whether you may develop glaucoma. Once diagnosed, glaucoma can be controlled.

  • Macular Degeneration Treatment and Management
  • The macula is a part of the retina in the back of the eye that ensures that our central vision is clear and sharp. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) occurs when the arteries that nourish the retina harden. Deprived of nutrients, the retinal tissues begin to weaken and die, causing vision loss. Patients may experience anything from a blurry, gray or distorted area to a blind spot in the center of vision.

AMD is the number-one cause of vision loss in the U.S. Macular degeneration doesn't cause total blindness because it doesn't affect the peripheral vision. Possible risk factors include genetics, age, diet, smoking and sunlight exposure. Regular eye exams are highly recommended to detect macular degeneration early and prevent permanent vision loss.

  • Treatment of Retinal and Optic Nerve Disorders

  • The retina is a thin sheet of nerve tissue in the back of the eye where light rays are focused and transmitted to the brain. The vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the eye and is connected to the retina, optic nerve and many blood vessels. Problems with the retina and vitreous -- including retinal tear and detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, infection and trauma -- can lead to vision loss and blindness. Early detection and treatment are critical in correcting problems before vision is lost or preventing further deterioration from occurring.

Using advanced technology such as optical coherence tomography (OCT), retinal photography, fluorescein angiography and automated visual fields, our doctors and retinal surgeon will diagnose and treat all of these conditions.

Specialty Equipment Used at Garber Eye Center Include:

  • Digital Retinal Imaging
  • Flourescein Angiography Retinal Imaging
  • Humphrey Automated Visual Fields Analyzer
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) - For diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases
  • YAG Laser
  • Ultrasound A-Scan
